CHEAP WAYS TO MAKE OVER YOUR APARTMENT

Even though you may be living in a small apartment -- and even though you're trying to save money in this down economy -- there are some great, cheap ways to make your place look more expensive ...

  • Paint -- A fresh coat of paint works wonders. If you've been living somewhere for a year, consider spending a weekend repainting a room or two. You can get by spending $40 on supplies and you might be able to beg a friend to help you.
  • Knobs -- Change your old, beat-up knobs. There are websites out there that have cool substitutes for your boring, junky knobs that don't cost a fortune.
  • Frames -- You're an adult now, so take down or frame your posters. Nothing should be on your walls unless it's in a frame.
  • Garbage Can -- You'd be surprised by the difference a nice garbage can makes in a kitchen. Shower curtains and cute soap dishes also go a long way.

DATING SCENE: 3 Simple Questions To Ask Your Date(Posted 3:00 AM, 1/27/2010)

Getting your date to open up can be tricky -- you want to find out what makes them tick without turning your date into an interrogation.

Jason Kosmas and Dushan Zaric, co-authors of the dating book You Didn't Hear It From Us, have observed hundreds of couples as part owners of the New York bar Employees Only. They share a few getting-to-know-you questions that'll actually reveal something about your date ...

1. What kind of food do you like? People eat together more often than they sleep together, so food compatibility is huge. Plus, you can tell a lot about a person from their appetite. If they aren't even willing to try your favorite Thai restaurant, what other things are they closed off to?

2. How did you get into your line of work? Better to find out the journey that got them to where they are than to reduce them to their income bracket.

3. Who inspires you the most? By asking who inspires them, you can get a sense of the kind of person they look up to and the direction they want their life to go in.

DATING SCENE: Finding Love In The Supermarket(Posted 3:00 AM, 1/27/2010)

Even though online dating sites have made it possible to meet people without leaving the comfort of your own home, there is still something to be said for getting out there and approaching people face-to-face.

Singles know that a match can be made anywhere -- school, work, church, or ... the grocery store.

The challenge at the grocery store, of course, is that you have to figure out whether or not the person you're approaching is actually single.

Here's a way to figure out if a guy is single just by looking in his grocery cart:

  • One or two TV dinners: May be attached, but his wife or girlfriend could be away for a couple days.
  • Three or more TV dinners: Single
  • Cheap beer: College kid, probably single
  • Big bag of frozen fish sticks or French fries: Single
  • Axe body spray: Single
  • Pack of Handi-Wipes: Married with kids
  • People magazine: Attached -- and his wife or girlfriend is in charge
  • Microwave burritos: Single
  • Thin milk carton: Single
