WALKIN' DOES A BODY GOOD

OK, 2010 is here and for lots of us, that means kicking things up a notch in the exercise department. But you don't have to run marathons or take endless spinning classes -- here's why plain old walking is the best thing for your bod:

  • For your heart: Just 30 minutes of walking at least 3 times a week can lower your blood pressure. Plus, walking several times a week is just as effective as vigorous exercise when it comes to reducing women's risk of heart disease.
  • For your brain: Walking boosts your brain's production of endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that help ward off stress and depression and fight tension and anger.
  • For your skin: Like all cardio exercise, walking gets your heart pumping and improves circulation-and better blood flow means your skin looks (and IS!) healthier.
  • For your immune system: Walking 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week can help you cut your chances of getting a cold in HALF. Walking supports healthy circulation, which helps immune cells reach and kill viruses and bacteria more quickly.
  • For your bones: Weight-bearing exercise like walking helps build bone mass, which keeps bones stronger and fends off osteoporosis.

THINGS A MAN SHOULD KEEP IN HIS CAR

It's been a remarkably cold winter in many parts of the country. According to The Art of Manliness, guys should always be prepared for an emergency, so here's a list of things that should be in every man's car:

  • Fully Charged Cell Phone -- Cell phones have changed everything about getting stranded. It used to be you had to walk to a stranger's house in a blizzard when you went into a ditch.
  • Jumper Cables -- Having jumper cables is a good move for you ... and your fellow man. It's great to help other guys when they're in a jam.
  • Flashlight -- Good for providing light when putting on a spare tire, jump starting another car or exchanging insurance information with the clueless driver that rear ended you at a stop light. Maglites are best.
  • Warm Blankets -- Important to have, especially if you have a family. You might be able to handle the cold, but you don't want your wife and kids to have to.
  • LifeHammer -- You get extra credit for this one. When you're trying to escape from a sinking car, this little piece of plastic and metal can be the difference between life and death. Use it to break your window, cut your seatbelt and make your escape. (Or, just vow to never drive your car into a lake.)

DIET & EXERCISE: Keep Your Diet Resolutions!(Posted 3:00 AM, 1/6/2010)

According to MSN Health & Fitness, nearly half of all Americans make New Year's resolutions. And there's no doubt that many of thise resolutions have to do with losing weight. Here are four tips to help us on our diet path ...

1. Keep a food record. To fix your diet, you should understand where it's broken. The best way is to record everything you eat and analyze your routines.

2. Discover veggies. Adding veggies, fruits, whole grains and beans to your diet can play an important role in weight loss -- their high water and fiber content create a feeling of fullness with very little fat and calories.

3. Remove temptations. Keep only healthy foods at home and don't buy foods you know you have trouble resisting (even if you buy them for someone else!).

4. Don't give up! If you start to slide into your old bad habits, refuse to give up your efforts. Remember, persistence is better than perfection!
