VALENTINE'S DAY GIFTS FOR YOUR GUY

It seems like guys have it easier when it comes to buying Valentine's Day gifts -- they can always go with lingerie, chocolate or flowers. But women have to get more creative with V-Day gifts for their guys. Here are some ideas:

  • If he enjoys cocktails, he'll enjoy a simple barware set with things like a cocktail strainer, mixing spoon, jigger and bottle opener.
  • Guys don't like to admit they're lost, so get him a GPS for his car.
  • Chances are, his wallet is a bulky mess. A new wallet might get him to finally throw out all those old receipts and ticket stubs.
  • Like cozy nights on the couch? Sign him up for a year of Netflix and load his queue with a bunch of his favorite movies and TV shows.
  • Does he stay over a lot? Get him a pair of comfy PJs to keep at your place for those times when spending the night turns into spending the weekend.
  • Wow him with lingerie that's more his taste than yours -- he'll appreciate the sacrifice.
  • It's not really romantic, but most guys would love a membership to a "Beer of the Month" club (and it'll make them think of you all year long!).

TIPS FOR THE BROKEN-HEARTED

Sometimes it's the littlest things that send us spiraling -- and sometimes, it's big annoying holidays like Valentine's Day! Well, we can't mend your broken heart, but if the impending day has got you down, try some of these tips.

  • Write your "must-haves" and "can't-stands" for your future mate. What drove you nuts about the last guy? That he wouldn't dance? Maybe he didn't want kids! Whatever you want or need, write it down.
  • Relationship resolutions. Recall some things about yourself that you didn't like when you were together. Your diet? Gym habits? Bad habits? Figure out how to secure your fears and maintain you in the next relationship.
  • Ask yourself, "Why did you stay?" There's a relationship book titled It's Called A Break-Up Because It's Broken. Even if you weren't the one that called it quits, you likely had reason to leave too. What wasn't working for you?
  • Allow grief. We all have different ways of dealing with sadness. Allow yourself a little time before you get upset that you don't want out of your PJs. Crooning to sad songs or cranking rock ones, eating crap ... whatever it is, give yourself a fixed period and "enjoy."

VALENTINE'S DAY: Things To Do If You're Single

OK, so you're single on Valentine's Day ... So?? That's no reason to sit at home watching The Notebook and crying into a pint of ice cream. Instead, why not take back the holiday and do one of these 8 things? ...

1. Send someone flowers -- Your best friend? Your mom? Your dad? Whose day would you brighten with a bouquet?

2. Host a mixer -- Why not host cocktails for your single friends ... and their single friends? Decorate in a Valentine's theme and start some racy "get to know you" games. You'll all have fun and romance, without all the holiday's stress.

3. Indulge -- Take a trip to the spa, pamper yourself with a mani/pedi or get a lavish lunch at your favorite spot. Why shouldn't this day be all about you, you, you?

4. Dinner for Eight -- Not in the mood to meet new people? That's OK, neither are half your friends. Put together a lovely dinner party for a bunch of singles in your life! Don't forget to organize a treat of some kind like a fun cocktail or a decadent dessert. Happy Valentine's Day to you, and you, and you ...

5. Treat someone else! -- When was the last time your grandma got a pedicure? Your best friend? Take out someone who's even less prone to treating themselves than you are.

6. Take a trip -- You've got sisters, brothers and/or great friends in other cities, why not visit them?! Bring a local treat to someone far away, and celebrate each other on Valentine's Day.

7. Hit the gym -- Not only will the gym be quiet, but you can get your bod ready for your next beau. Exercise is a great way to pump the endorphins and shake the blues.

8. Volunteer -- Want to stop feeling sorry for yourself? Try helping others. Whether you read to children, feed the homeless, or entertain the sick, you'll not only reap the karmic benefits, but feel rewarded, give back, and remember what's truly important. (Hint: it's not whether or not you have a sweetie on February 14th.)
